Summary of Activities:
Symmetry Drawings and Double Doodles
Students will learn about how the left and right brain hemispheres communicate as they perform midline crossover drawings that promote brain network inter-connectivity. These fun drawings are a great way to exercise the brain as it uses both sides of the brain simultaneously while challenging the students to use both their dominant and non-dominate hands at the same time.
What Does My Network Look Like?
Students will imagine what their daily communication network looks like. Using lines and marks that are uniquely their own, students will map out who they talk to, text, email, etc., during a typical school day.
My Brain Is Not Hard Wired
Unlike a circuit board, there is no such thing as a hard wired brain. Although the underlying machinery of the brain is hardwired, it maintains a huge amount of flexibility to interact with the environment. By working with metalcraft in the shape of a brain, students will explore the concept of a pliable, malleable, and elastic brain network.
Sara Hodgson is an artist, designer and educator. For 35 years, she has worked with academic, artistic and community centers to develop outreach programs for school children. She has worked for the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the Philadelphia Museum of Art developing traveling art exhibitions with the intent of bringing artwork to underserved communities. In 2000 she establish a nonprofit entitled The Artworks Enrichment Fund. The mission of this fund is to bring art work and art supplies to school students whose programs had been eliminated through budget cuts. She is the founder and art director of Incompra Design. In 2014 she partnered with Dr. Danielle Bassett, Department of Bioengineering at the U of Penn to develop the Skirkanich Internship in Network Visualization.
