Designers, educators, and associate architects Dan Newman and Keith Hartwig will be discussing ‘Surveillance’, their current show at the Esther Klein Gallery, as well as their other recent work, in relation to issues that swirl around observational technology; both in the built environment and on the network.
Topics covered include the processes used in digital ad tracking and the commodification of our digital body and it’s actions. Additional focus is on the formal language of surveillance technologies, the narratives that surround them, and the speed of the infrastructures they inhabit.
Objects that record and store human activity are encountered hundreds of times everyday, in our homes, workplaces, and civic spaces. As a result, it’s important to understand not just our relationship to these devices and forces that have caused their placement, but also how they alter our relationships to the people and spaces around us.
